Garlic Pull – Big.

Yet another tardy post from two Sunday’s ago…

Sara’s garlic pull.

There’s a bit of a walk to get to the field.

First there’s the path which crosses a dry/wet stream…

The sound of laughter leading through a canopy of hardwood trees

Up a hillside

Sunlight – a sign of being close to the field

Almost there, just out of the woods, laughter louder…

A faraway welcome greeting from friends

It’s good to be known & loved.

Okay, down to business.

There those who “pull” and those who “dig”

I dig. That means I’ve had years of experience wielding a digging fork so as to be less likely to stab the bulb of garlic.

I don’t have a photo of a stab, but if you can imagine gouging a 1/2 inch wide steel tine with the force of a human leg behind it pushing through soil & scraping into the tender flesh of a below ground vegetable, well, you get the picture.

Both jobs are important.

Those that dig, loosen the soil below & around each head of garlic with a 4-tine digging fork. Methodically moving down each row.

The ones who pull, grab low on the stem to unearth the garlic intact.

The soil is brushed from the roots & bulb, then laying it (gently) in piles.

Bundles are made, & tied in such a way as to be strong enough to hold the weight of about 15 – 20 stalks in each bundle, which are then tied via square knot in pairs.

These will be hung over nails high in the barn to dry.

It was a beautiful day – and we dug the entire half-acre of garlic with the least amount of stabs EVER.

This is the river of bundled garlic awaiting Sara & two of her horses pulling the wagon.

A view from the field across the pasture where the horse barn lives.

A closer view as she harnesses the horses…

Here they come!

Connor on the left, & Larry on the right!

So handsome. Big beauties.

I mostly was taking many videos at this point of the day – but I didn’t ask everyone for their blessing to be posted on the blog, so my apologies for the choppy sequence.

Once the cart was loaded to capacity, Sara drives Connor & Larry down a lane then up the road to where the garlic is hung at the barn near the house.

Then they return with an empty cart, and once again the cart is loaded back up with the remaining garlic, & Sara drives the horses back to the barn by the house where the rest of the garlic is hung.

While I’m not afraid of heights, & used to be one of the people at the top of the ladders, it’s a heavy job so I bowed out this year of that final step.

And it was with Sara’s blessing that I stayed and simply sat in the field & enjoyed just being there, taking in the sounds.

Half-acre of garlic, hanging from the barn rafters.

I felt fatigued from the long day of physical work out in the sun, and I felt happy & proud & grateful to be a part of this yearly ritual & especially, with the awareness that this garlic allowed the horses to have hay in the winter & Sara’s daughter to go to college… Well, I felt content in a deep way.

Good morning from Caroline.

Yesterday
Three people asked:
So, do you have any big plans for the weekend?

And for a noticed second
I thought about it,
Yes, there was a relatively big plan. Continue reading

True riches.

Nikki McClure is an artist
I respect & appreciate her work
I don’t remember the image she created that went along with the phrase which sticks in my head:

“Know your true riches”

IMG_0592.JPG
I’ve been rolling around this phrase in my head recently, actively looking around at my life
Recognizing these true riches

IMG_0739.JPG
Eyes that can see the gorgeous Autumn light

Or feeling the breeze on my skin, hearing the leaves rustling while on a hike

IMG_0575.JPG
Sometimes, the camera isn’t available to capture certain events, or would be disturbing

Like on the recent Land Trust walk…
At a certain point on the hike, we paused, settling down to talk when a large doe came up
We had both sat down near a well-travelled deer path
She wasn’t spooked, she didn’t bolt
She was SO beautiful
And she stood there for a bit, even coming closer before heading up the hill a ways to walk around us.

It wasn’t the time for the camera
It was time for Being With.

And later, towards the end of the walk, a handsome Leopard frog was seen.
Again, just Being With.

Know your true riches.

IMG_0680.JPG

IMG_0706.JPG
Or hanging out with an Ancient, like Genuine kitty.

IMG_0670.JPG
Or with a friend who is a skilled pie maker-baker

IMG_0668.JPG
Or hearing the sound of a waterfall
(I wish I knew how to upload videos… Dang)

I may not be able to get a car loan with these riches…
But it’s good to recognize
How connected I am with others
Even if I don’t feel rooted

It’s good practice for me to actively cultivate knowing my true riches.

sometimes, you just gotta stay (y)inside.

yesterday

was a very tender day

Image

i don’t really know why

i could try to point my finger in a number of directions, trying to find the root cause…

Uranus opposition? Pluto square? transits, moon cycle, mid-life unraveling…?

but the truth is i don’t really know.

Image

all i know is that being alive felt very porous

and open to the world

thin-skinned.

Image

today was grand jury duty.

Image

and today i lied and called in sick because i just felt too tender to go and listen and see

Image

so i stayed home.

i stayed inside.

(the irony of lying regarding jury duty did not escape me)

i listened to the birds, and read, & meditated, made a phone call & wrote some emails trying to forward a project i’ve been working on since 2011, ate food, drank hot water, listened to the 3 saved astrology cd’s, baked muffins, and threw out all of my old journals.

Image

they were in a box marked to be burned in the case of death, so, why was i waiting?

Image

(blue flax is one of my favorite perennials)

today, a friend & shiatsu mentor since 1995 called – it was so nice to catch up.

and so nice to be able to tell her about the tender, raw-ness, & that she understood such things.

she gave her support for taking care of my Heart Protector, for the self-care i practiced today, & encouraged me to stay in Yin until i was ready to rise up again.

and while we are well into Spring, and while it’s the time of great rising energy

Image

well, sometimes, you just gotta stay (y)inside.

Image

and sometimes, you gotta write things that your friends say on your wrist.

Image

on one of the cd’s, my teacher said: you’ve got to share the pain out into the world to heal it.

which, quite honestly, feels really naked-making, but i get the feeling that she’s right.

and so, this.

Image

20 years ago, i moved to NYC to study shiatsu.

and while i don’t practice all that much any more, i am still learning about Heart Protector & Triple Heater.

but from the inside out, this time.

Image

i don’t honestly know where all of this is headed, how things will unfold.

it remains to be seen.

i feel patient, though.

i hope it will be of benefit

this time, this composting time…

i guess only time will tell.

Good morning.

Image

Good morning.

this is the view to the West.

this is the good morning view for a while.

it’s been a while

the computer wasn’t working

but i asked a friend if he’d come out to check out the computer

and he said

yes

and so he did

and now, i’m back online.

i need people.

i do.

i rely on them

most of whom i don’t even know.

every time i sit down for breakfast

and contemplate everything i’m eating, or how i was able to prepare the food

was due to many many people, animals, forces of the world…

sun, rain, elementals

the farmers nearby who care well for their chickens and lo and behold i have a bright orange yolked egg

the bread baked by people nearby

who in the world made the stove?

someone made it

delivered it

mined the metals from this earth

it all comes from the earth

we are so reliant on this earth

and on each other.

for a long time, and even now still sometimes, often

the feeling of need stirs up some kind of reaction

but there is need

and today i’m actually grateful for it

can see the beauty in it and of it

this intricate web

that i cannot see

but have a sense of

blessing on you, your eyes your mind if you are reading this

blessing on you and your life

breakfast is for the world of the living

i’m packing to move

and in a purse given to me by my grandmother long ago

my dear Yaya

Image

was a small silk pouch

holding three silver coins

given to me by my grandfather even a longer time ago

my dear Papa

Image

coins from the same year i was born.

and putting them into my hand

feeling their weight

their weight

weight is for the world of the living

Image

feeling their weight i thought of the practice of putting coins in the mouth of a person who had died

imagining these three coins in my mouth, perhaps, one day

i couldn’t remember where the practice comes from

or the symbolic gesture of coins in the mouth

sure, i could have paused, Googled the information

but i didn’t

kept packing

Image

packing is for the world of the living

as is breakfast

steaming, hot oatmeal

which now stands cold

in a bowl

after hearing the news the word

Image

news & words are for the world of the living

of my dear anchor, my friend, my Elder, my love

passing in the night

Image

tears & breakfast don’t go well together

if nothing else, i’ve learned this in my time alive here on the planet

and that is something, just to know that.

Image

full moon pulls in & out

birth & death – labors both

one, we are ushered in, labored in by another.

one, we have to labor ourselves, it seems.

a different sort of birth.

Image

with a mix of grief & joy with memories

sending blessings

to her family

Image

to the hearts of her family & friends

and to all worlds

for all beings everywhere.

sending Metta.

Pickled peppers, anchors, & Blue Hubbard squash.

Image

Don’t wait.

if you wait, the pickled peppers might go bad.

if someone gives you a gift, open it

Image

use it

use it up

delight in each pepper

savor the spicy zing on the tongue.

before eating – offer thanks, gather blessings

imagine their garden

Image

the tending, the soil

Image

imagine the rain, the sun, and all the Elementals involved in the creation of a plant-being

a pepper

Image

imagine the hands that tended to this pepper plant

Image

these hands that you know

the one that you love

the one that gave you this jar of pickled peppers

because they know you love them

don’t wait to eat them

savor them

enjoy

Image

Image

every Wednesday, i support the tending of a house & the people, the home of some Elders.

this job, these people

have been my anchors.

since 2009, every Wednesday

(barring retreats, visits to family, & the month i was out when i injured my back in 2012)

every Wednesday this place, these people have been my destination, my North Pole.

Image

from a string of boyfriends, through various places of living, & a number of farming situations

since 2009 they have been my one constant.

Anchor:  any device used in the manner of an anchor to hold a boat in place…. a reliable support…. a source of confidence that serves to hold an object firmly

yes

i need this

i am drifty

Image

finding love here & there – a place, a person, a job

so easy to fall in love

but these Elders, this place, on Wednesdays has held me tight

with gratidute

even when i want to leave, to run…

Image

but i stay.

i love them.

they love Blue Hubbard squash.

Image

the first year i farmed on my own it was a bumper crop for Winter squash.

hundreds of pounds

but no place to put them.

Image

so they let me put all of them in their upstairs bedroom

the great Blue Hubbard – easily over 25 pounds – sat like an emperor on a low table

waiting

this year i planted no Winter squash

Image

but found a Blue Hubbard and with the remembering of the pickled peppers

decided to not wait any longer to cook it up

Image

(well, part of it)

Image

big beauty.

Image

into soup

made to share

Image

don’t wait.

who are your anchors?

what would you want to say to the ones you appreciate?

who are the people that have made a difference in your life?

1020131017

what would you share with them if you allowed your heart to speak?

what would you want to let them know

if you let your heart speak it’s appreciations?

0814001122

don’t wait

do you have a dream in your heart?

Image

a longing that has been there forever?

a way of life you want to live?

1110131635

would you dare speak your heart to the one that causes it to beat a little faster?

even though you might feel like a prize fool after?

gather up your courage

and speak from your heart.

don’t wait.

open the jar of pickled peppers

make the soup from the Hubbard you’ve been saving

let The Ones know how your heart feels about them

and the ways they have shaped the life of your life.

don’t wait.
